GENERAL
Where can I buy Fit For The Job products?
This website is a product catalogue, so products aren't sold directly here. The Fit For The Job range is available through a number of independent DIY stores and major online retailers. We recommend checking your local independent DIY shop or searching online for "Fit For The Job" followed by the product you're looking for. Availability and product selection vary between retailers. BRUSHES
View productsWhat size paint brush should I use?
Match the brush to the surface. A 0.5 to 1 inch brush suits narrow window frames and fiddly details, 1.5 to 2 inch brushes suit skirting boards, doors and frames, as well as cutting in, and 3 to 4 inch brushes are best for larger flat areas. If you're not sure, a set such as the 5 pc Loss Free Paint Brush Set gives you a choice of sizes in one pack.
How do I stop brush marks and loose bristles spoiling my finish?
Load the brush a third of the way up the bristles, apply in long, even strokes, then finish with light strokes in one direction. A quality brush makes a real difference. The Diamond Paint Brush is a great choice for a smooth finish, and our No Bristle Loss Paint Brush is made to stop stray bristles ending up in your paintwork.
What's the best brush for cutting in?
A cutting in brush has an angled tip that lets you paint a neat line along ceilings, skirting and window frames. Try the Diamond Cutting In Brush or the No Bristle Loss Cutting In Brush.
What should I use to paint large walls or exterior surfaces with a brush?
A wide brush holds more paint and covers big areas faster. The 4" Wall Brush and 4" Emulsion Block Brush are built for walls, including rougher surfaces where a fine brush would wear out quickly.
How do I paint a fence or shed quickly?
Use a wide brush to hold plenty of treatment, and work along the length of each board, following the grain. Finish a whole board before moving on to avoid lap marks. The 4" Shed & Fence Brush is made for this, and the Woodcare Brush is ideal for garden furniture and smaller wooden items.
How should I clean and store my brushes?
For water-based paints, rinse in warm soapy water until it runs clear. For oil-based paints, use white spirit or brush cleaner, then wash with soapy water. Reshape the bristles and dry the brush flat or hanging, never resting on its bristles. Keep a separate brush for wood stains and treatments, as they can be hard to clean out fully.
ROLLERS
View productsWhat's the quickest way to paint a wall or ceiling?
Cut in around the edges with a brush first, then fill the main area with a 9 inch roller. It covers large areas far faster than a brush and gives a more even finish. The 9" x 1.5" 3 pc Medium Pile Roller Set gives you everything you need to get started.
Which roller pile should I choose?
The pile is the length of the roller's fibres. Medium pile is the all-rounder for most interior walls and ceilings, such as the 9" x 1.5" Medium Pile Roller sleeve. Long pile pushes paint into rough surfaces like brick and render, so use the Long Pile Masonry Roller for exterior walls. For gloss and satin on doors and woodwork, choose foam.
How do I avoid roller marks and patchy coverage?
Load the roller evenly, roll off the excess in the tray, and work in sections of about a square metre using a loose W pattern. Keep a wet edge by overlapping into the area you've just painted, and don't press too hard. Replace worn or matted sleeves, as they hold less paint.
How do I reach high ceilings without a ladder?
Fit your roller frame to an extension pole. The 5pc Extension Pole lets you adjust the length to suit the room, or choose the Medium Pile Roller, Frame & Pole Set to get everything together.
Can I use a roller on doors and woodwork?
Yes, and it's often quicker than a brush on flat panels. A foam roller lays gloss and satin down smoothly with very little texture. Try the 7" Triple Foam Gloss Roller & Frame Set for doors, or the 7 pc 4" Foam Mini Roller Set for smaller areas and touch-ups.
What's the easiest way to stain decking or paint a fence?
A wide applicator gets treatment onto boards much faster than a small brush. The 5 pc Decking Stain Applicator Set is made for decking, and the 7" 4 pc Shed & Fence Roller & Brush Kit has what you need for fences and sheds.
I'm new to decorating. Is there a kit with everything I need?
Yes. The 10 pc Complete Home Decorating Kit brings the essentials together so you can start straight away. For bigger projects, the 21 pc Ultimate Home Decorating Kit adds even more tools.
What is a paint pad and why would I use one?
A paint pad is a flat pad of fine fibres on a handle. It holds paint well, spatters less than a roller and gives a smooth, even coat, making it a great choice for beginners. The 5 pc 7" Click System Paint Pad Set lets you swap pads quickly between jobs.
How do I cut in neatly without masking tape?
Use an edging pad or an edge roller. The Fit For The Job Corner & Edge Roller is designed for corners and edges where a standard roller won't reach. Load it lightly and run it along in one steady movement, then tidy any tricky spots with a Diamond Cutting In Brush. It's one of the easiest ways to get a sharp line between walls and ceilings.
TOOLS
View productsHow do I fill cracks and holes in walls?
Rake out any loose material, press filler in with a filling knife, and overfill slightly. Draw the blade across firmly to leave it nearly flush, then sand smooth once dry. The Soft Grip Flexible Filling Knife comes in three sizes, and the 4 pack Plastic Filling Blades give you a blade for every size of repair.
What's the difference between a scraper and a filling knife?
A scraper has a stiff blade for removing old paint, wallpaper and adhesive. A filling knife has a thinner, flexible blade for spreading and smoothing filler. The 4pc Scraper Set covers most stripping jobs, while the 3pc Plastic Scraper Set is gentler on delicate surfaces.
How do I remove paint from a window without scratching the glass?
Wet the glass, hold the blade at a low angle and push gently. The Window Scraper is made for exactly this job. For paint in mouldings and grooves on window frames, use the Combination Shavehook.
How do I get a neat sealant line around a bath or sink?
Apply an even bead of sealant, then smooth it in one continuous pass with a shaped profile tool. The 3 pc Caulking Tool Kit gives you a choice of profiles for a clean, professional-looking finish.
Do I really need to stir paint before using it?
Yes. Pigments settle over time, which can cause uneven colour and coverage. For tins of paint, use 12" Wooden Paint Stirrers. For larger quantities, plaster or screed, the 16" Drill Fit Paddle Mixer fits your drill and mixes quickly. Use a low speed to avoid splashing.
How do I make sure my wallpaper hangs straight?
Walls and corners are rarely truly vertical, so don't use them as your guide. Hang a plumb line about a roll's width from the corner, mark it in pencil, and line up your first drop against it. The 2" Steel Plumb Bob & Line makes this quick and accurate.
How do I get rid of air bubbles and lifted seams in wallpaper?
Smooth each drop from the centre outwards with a paperhanging brush, such as the 7" Paperhanging Brush. Then run the Seam Roller gently along the joins to press the edges flat.
What's the best way to trim wallpaper neatly?
Press the paper into the join at the ceiling or skirting, hold a straight edge against it and cut with a sharp blade. The 24" Decorator's Trimming Edge and 9mm Snap-Off Knife work well together; snap off a section whenever the blade dulls to avoid tearing the paper. The 10" Scissors are handy for cutting drops to length.
How do I keep paint off the carpet when painting skirting boards?
Hold a paint shield against the floor as you work along the skirting, wiping it clean regularly. The 10" Paint Shield protects carpets and floors and also helps you paint a straight edge.
Is there one tool that does a bit of everything?
The 13-in-1 Soft Grip Multi-Function Tool combines several decorating jobs in one tool, making it a handy addition to any toolbox. Pair it with the Soft Grip 5m Tape Measure for measuring up before you start.
TAPES
View productsHow do I get a crisp, straight paint line with masking tape?
Apply tape to a clean, dry surface and press the edge down firmly with a fingernail or filling knife so paint can't creep underneath. Paint over the edge, not into it. The Triple Pack 25m General Purpose Masking Tape includes 1", 1.5" and 2" widths, so you have the right size for trims, skirting and wider edges.
When should I remove masking tape?
Peel it off while the last coat is still slightly wet, pulling it back on itself at a low angle. If the paint has dried, run a sharp blade along the edge first so you don't lift the paint with the tape. Don't leave tape on longer than you need to.
Which tape should I use for packing boxes when I move?
Use parcel tape rather than masking tape, as it's stronger and holds boxes securely. The Triple Pack 2" x 66M Brown Parcel Tape is ideal for packing and sealing boxes.
ABRASIVES
View productsDo I need to sand before painting?
Usually, yes. A light sand removes bumps and gives new paint something to grip, especially on gloss or previously painted woodwork. Wipe away the dust with a damp cloth afterwards. If you need a bit of everything, the 11 pc Sanding Set is a good place to start.
What grit sandpaper should I use?
Use a coarse grit to remove flaking paint or shape wood, a medium grit for general smoothing and sanding down filler, and a fine grit for a smooth finish between coats. Our Fine Grade Sandpaper comes in a range of grades, and the Assorted Grades Wet & Dry is ideal for a very fine finish.
How do I sand flat surfaces and curves evenly?
Wrap sandpaper around a block for flat surfaces so you don't create dips. The Cork Hand Sanding Block and Decorator's Rubber Sanding Block are both made for this. For curves, mouldings and spindles, use the Contour Sanding Pads or a Flexible Sanding Block, which bend to follow the shape.
How do I remove rust and flaking paint from metal?
Use a wire brush to scrub back to a sound surface before priming. The Universal Wire Brush handles larger areas like railings and gates, and the 3 pc Soft Grip Mini Wire Brush Set gets into tight spots. Finish with Assorted Grades Steel Wool for a smoother result.
SURFACE PROTECTION
View productsHow do I protect my floors and furniture while decorating?
Move what you can out of the room, push the rest into the middle, and cover everything. Lay sheets right up to the skirting boards and tape the edges down. The 12' x 9' Polythene Dust Sheet is waterproof and lightweight, making it ideal for covering furniture and floors.
I'm decorating a whole house. Is there a more economical option?
For large jobs, a roll lets you cut exactly the amount you need for each room. The 50 sqm Polythene Dust Sheet Roll covers plenty of ground with less waste.
How do I protect worktops, windows or carpets that I can't cover with a sheet?
Use self-adhesive protective film, which sticks in place so it won't slip or lift while you work. The 10m x 500mm Multi-Surface Self-Adhesive Film is designed for a range of surfaces. Remove it once the job is finished.
SWEEPING
View productsHow should I clean up after a DIY job?
Sweep up dust and debris before removing dust sheets, so nothing spreads around the house. The 11" Broom & Dust Pan Set has everything you need for a quick tidy-up.
Do I need a different broom for indoors and outdoors?
It helps. Indoor brooms have softer bristles for smooth floors and fine dust, while outdoor brooms have stiffer bristles for patios, paths and driveways. Choose the 10" Synthetic Indoor Broom for inside and the 11" Synthetic Outdoor Broom for outside.
WORKWEAR & PPE
View productsWhat should I wear when decorating?
Wear clothes you don't mind getting paint on. For full rooms or ceilings, a boilersuit gives head-to-toe coverage; the 100% Cotton Drill White Boilersuit comes in 11 sizes. For smaller jobs, the White Painter's Apron protects your clothes.
Do I need a dust mask when sanding?
Yes. Sanding filler, plaster and woodwork creates fine dust you shouldn't breathe in, so wear a mask and keep the room well ventilated. Dust Masks - 5 Pack are ideal for home jobs, and the Box of 50 suits bigger projects. Check the product details to make sure the mask is right for your task, and never sand old paint that may contain lead.
