FAQs
See all FAQsHow do I sand flat surfaces and curves evenly?
Wrap sandpaper around a block for flat surfaces so you don't create dips. The Cork Hand Sanding Block and Decorator's Rubber Sanding Block are both made for this. For curves, mouldings and spindles, use the Contour Sanding Pads or a Flexible Sanding Block, which bend to follow the shape.
Do I need to sand before painting?
Usually, yes. A light sand removes bumps and gives new paint something to grip, especially on gloss or previously painted woodwork. Wipe away the dust with a damp cloth afterwards. If you need a bit of everything, the 11 pc Sanding Set is a good place to start.
What grit sandpaper should I use?
Use a coarse grit to remove flaking paint or shape wood, a medium grit for general smoothing and sanding down filler, and a fine grit for a smooth finish between coats. Our Fine Grade Sandpaper comes in a range of grades, and the Assorted Grades Wet & Dry is ideal for a very fine finish.
How do I remove rust and flaking paint from metal?
Use a wire brush to scrub back to a sound surface before priming. The Universal Wire Brush handles larger areas like railings and gates, and the 3 pc Soft Grip Mini Wire Brush Set gets into tight spots. Finish with Assorted Grades Steel Wool for a smoother result.
